About Model UN

Model United Nations is a student activity to simulate sessions held in the real United Nations. Each participant plays a role of a delegate of the UN member states and attends a session to discuss current global issues. In order to represent the assigned country, students analyze the political and historical background of each state, decide their policy and negotiate with other delegations to realize both national and transnational interests. Through the activity, participants will achieve a profound understanding toward the issues that global society faces with. Also, the process of diplomacy allows students to practice some important skills required in society, such as researching, writing, public speaking, problem solving, conflict resolution and consensus building.

Messege of Director

Dear Delegates,

It is my pleasure to welcome you to Japan-China-ROK Model United Nations conference.

At this conference, we will offer exciting simulation of the 10-Year Review of the Implementation of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs.

MDGs are the world’s time-bound targets for addressing extreme poverty. For example, MDGs goal 1 seeks to cut world poverty in half. This year, 2010, is the 10th anniversary of MDGs and the 10-year review conference will be held in September at UN Headquarters. There, world leaders will discuss how to accelerate progress towards the MDGs. Only five years left until the 2015 deadline.

Instead of dealing with all topics concerning MDGs, we will concentrate on the issue of the special needs of the most vulnerable. “The most vulnerable” include children, indigenous people, displaced people or others suffered from increasing inequalities based on geography, sex, gender, age, disability, ethnicity and other causes. We need to pay attention to their special needs.

We, all organizing members, are seeking the way to make this conference a platform for connecting tomorrow’s leaders with each other in Japan, China and ROK. Please do not hesitate to apply. We are sure that it will be a great and exciting experience for you to discuss, negotiate and seek the way to achieve MDGs with enthusiastic students from each country.

Sincerely,

Yuki TAKAUCHI

Director of the conference
