What's Model United Nations -模擬国連とは-
Model United Nations is an activity to simulate sessions held in the real United Nations. Each participant plays a role of a delegate of the UN member states or a representatives of Non Governmental Organizations and attends a session to discuss current global agenda.
In order to represent the assigned country, participants analyze the political and historical background of each state, find national interest, decide their policy for maximize national interests and minimize bad impacts, and negotiate with other delegations to realize both national . Through the activity, participants will achieve a profound understanding toward the issues that global society faces with. Also, the process of diplomacy allows participants to practice some important skills required in society, such as researching, writing, public speaking, facilitation, communication, team building, problem solving, conflict resolution and consensus building.
Model United Nations is not just an activity of discussion, but of an over-all study through role-playing. This activity encourages participants to learn the issues as their own concerns, giving them opportunities to achieve more insightful and diversified viewpoints toward the global society today.
【History】
Model United Nations can trace its history back to the Model League Nations, which started in Harvard University in 1923(but here is no official record of how Model UN began). As the United Nations was established after World War Two, they renamed the activity as Model United Nations.
In Japan, Activities of Model UN first started in 1983 under the supervision of Ms. Sadako Ogata, the former UNHCR, who was a professor at Sophia University. then, Since “Japan Model United Nations Society” was established, various activities have been carried out, such as delegating students to the National Model United Nations Conference held in New York every year. Today, many associations, such as Komaba Model United Nations are engaged in activities of Model UN. Those activities are held not only at universities but also at high schools and in local communities as a part of English education.

【How to enjoy MUN】
1. Choose country which you play as delegate
2. Understand the background of agenda item and context of your country
First, you research the background of agenda item and the relationship with your country
you should find "What is discussion point", "what made it worse?" and the historical back ground between U.N. and agenda item.
3. Decide policy
After research, you can find national interest. According to it, you make policy and conference strategy "how will you get prosperity in this conference?".
4. Participation to Simulation
In Simulation, you can show your policy in formal speech and informal negotiation. And you also make draft resolution. lastly, conference adopt resolution as outcome.
5. Review the conference and agenda item
most important thing is what you feel and think in simulation.
