Japan Model United Nations Society
Japan Model United Nations Society (JMUNS) is the first
educational organization founded in Japan to simulate the United
Nations.
The Model United Nations Executive, founded in 1983 at
Sophia University under Sadako Ogata (the former United Nations High
Commissioner for Refugees) who was Professor of the University at that
time, was the precursor of JMUNS.
At first, sending the Japanese Delegation Team to the
National Model United Nations conference (NMUN) held in New York City
every year was the main activity.
But simulating the United Nations later became the regular
activity because of the expansion of the scale of the committee.
And it was renamed “JMUNS” in 1987.
The purpose of JMUNS is to study international relations and
related subjects through the Model United Nations conference, to
discuss solutions to global issues and to promote people who
can contribute to the international society.
We also work spread the Model United Nations in Japan as an
effective way of studying international politics and problems.
The JMUNS has promoted a large number of people who can contribute to
the international society since 1983. Those people who have
participated in the activities of JMUNS are actively working at various
fields such as Japanese ministries and government offices,
international organizations, private enterprises, and Non-Governmental
Organizations (NGO).
Today seven branch (Waseda, Kunitachi, Yotsuya, Hiyoshi, Kyushu,Tsukuba
and Utsunomiya) under JMUNS. Approximately 400 students from about 30
colleges are involved in these societies in Tokyo metropolitan and
Kyushu area. Our activities are not just sending delegates to The
National Model United Nations conference (NMUN) but also holding the
All Japan Model United Nations conference (AJMUN) and the Kansai Model
United Nations Conference (KMUNC) to have a conference in the form of
the model United Nations by calling participants mainly from colleges
and graduate schools. Moreover, JMUNS has provides the guidance for
accession to the international civil servants. It also holds seminars
periodically to deepen understanding to the international issues.
JMUNS Guiding Principles
The JMUNS work to promote the understanding of global issues and
talents for contributing to the international society. Therefore, we
think our acts should be coherent and we have 3 guiding principles.
1.A good understanding of global issues and to find peaceful solution
to world problems
2.Development of the talents, which can contribute to make the better
international society
3.Contribution to promote and develop the MUN in Japan
All our activities are based on these principles. We try to encourage
active students to be our members and to do various activities for
making our world better.
The Activity of Japan Model United Nations Society(JMUNS)
In order to pursue the principle we hold up, the JMUMS carries out
activities in many directions. Beginning from the General Activity at
each branch or local level, JMUNS is involved in various activities
such as opening the All Japan Model United Nations conference(AJMUN)
and the Kansai Model United Nations Conference (KMUNC) by calling upon
participants of wide range, with undergraduate and graduate students
from all over the country in the middle. Also, the JMUNS is involved in
activities such as sending representative groups to The National Model
United Nations conference(NMUN).
