【Concept of the committee】

Face Up and Speak Up

In this committee, you will be encouraged to face up and speak up through the interaction with agenda and interaction with other participants who have variety of backgrounds and thoughts toward the matter.

Firstly, in terms of agenda, you will consider human right of migrant workers, the topic which you may not familiar with. As many of you have already acknowledged, countries in European Union are now struggling with huge number of migrants (and refugees). For non-migrant citizens, on the other hand, it is difficult to set an opportunity for considering these issues especially from the perspectives of human rights – therefore we tend to regard them as unrelated or irreverent problems. However, regarding current world affairs such as European migrant crisis, we are now encouraged to face up to these issues. During the conference, we will expect you to stand face to face with this complex agenda from many points of view, such as countries, international affairs and migrant workers themselves.

Secondly, in this committee, you will discuss any concerns and matters with people from diverse backgrounds. During the conference, you may sometimes face difficulties in expressing your thoughts, understanding other delegates’ policies or negotiating some particular topic, especially if you are not a native English speaker. However, in this committee, you will be encouraged to speak up– participate actively in discussion with all other delegates, and interact with them both in and outside of the committee to build more broad relationships. Do not worry too much even if you are not a native English speaker, or if this is your first MUN conference. Dais members are always happy to help you during the committee. By the end ofAJMUN28th, you will be able to build your confidence for public speaking, discussion and interaction with people with diverse backgrounds.

We hope you all enjoy interaction both with agenda and with other participants throughout the conference, and then make full use of your AJMUN experiences in your later life!

【Agenda】

There are more than 230 millions of migrants in the world and around 150 million of them are recognized as a migrant worker – people working outside of their home country.
However, in many parts of the world, they are likely to be marginalized and deprived of basic human rights. For example, some of them are forced to work in dangerous and dirty conditions, others are deprived of basic social rights such as access to medical treatments.

In addition to that, the human rights violation to family members and relatives of migrant workers are also concerned, especially for women and children. For example, they are more likely to become a victim of violence or abuse, and many migrant children cannot receive enough quality of primary or secondary education compared with nationals in concerned countries.

In 1991, International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families was signed and it entered in force in 2003, in order to promote migrants’ human rights as human beings. As of 2015, 48 countries have ratified this convention, however no major migrant-receiving countries has ratified the convention for various reasons. Therefore, it can hardly be said that the convention works efficiently and issue on human rights of migrant workers still remains, or even becomes worse.
