【Concept of the committee】

Break your inner “measurer"

People often say “Never make `Politics` `Religion` and `Baseball` a conversation topic”. It is true, all of these topics are 1, Fragile problems, which may affect people’s identity 2, There is no “answer” to the topic. To sum up, people have different comments and values to these topics, therefore it’s easy to go into an argument, and hurt each other. That is why these topics were a “taboo” and told not to talk about.

However, is it right to avoid any discussion about the topic? Is “different values” a bad thing?

There are so many “Different” in the world. Race, religion, Way of living, culture…. And it is true that these “Difference” can cause and have caused many conflicts. Before world war 2 there were conflicts between nationalism and identity, but nowadays conflicts between culture and religion has been increasing.

The world is also changing under these circumstances. The World Bank has held the first ever conference with religious leaders, which had made the first example to let the world be aware of the importance of discussions among different religions. Conflicts caused by “Difference” can only be solved by accepting “Difference”.

At this conference, we ask you to talk about a “Taboo” Topic, “Religion” and “politics” at the same time (Sorry there is no “Baseball” in the topic lol).In addition, there will be many people who has different backgrounds. Moreover, during the conference you will discuss as a “Delegate of a country” or a “Religious leader”. You have to let go your identity, background for a while, and understand and act like someone else who has a different value and background.

Accepting something “Different” is a thing that everybody fears. However by trying to understand and accept the difference, we will guarantee that you will have the best experience in your life at this conference.

Whoever wants to 1, have a discussion of your life 2, can try to understand anything “different” (ways of thinking, value, culture, etc) You are very welcome to this conference!

We are looking forward of your apply.

【Agenda】

Nowadays, many disputes are caused by religions reasons; compared to 1990, religion related disputes has increased to 33% to 60%, which makes “Religion” an important topic considering international peace. In addition, the recent rise of ISIS brings up Islamic extremism to the top page of newspapers, and not only national but also international terrorism has increased more than 8000 cases than in 2000.

Therefore, it is crucial to think how we should tolerate violence related to religion, locally and globally. At this conference, we will discuss about the peaceful methods how to solve religious and cultural disputes as delegates and heads of main religions.

There are 2 main discussion points and with two small topics
1. Counter Action to Violent Extremism
A, Responding to violence
How to respond to violence which has been already occurred. This shall talk about counter methods such as Global/ National/ Regional frameworks, Peacebuilding in dispute areas, Protection of religious and cultural sites.

B, Prevention of Violence
How to prevent extremism. Such as establishing good governance, the empowerment of women, education, using social media

2. Promoting tolerance to prejudice, incitement, harassment or violence
This topic is to discuss the backlash of extremism, which is prejudice and Incitement of the religion itself. Participants will talk about how and why these prejudice occurs, and how should the international society act towards it.

The key of these discussion is that the participants should have a multifaceted point of view, since the topic is not only about stopping violence caused by religion, but also how to protect religion. This may seem a two-sided discussion but it is important to discuss both sides of the problem.
